Appoint the right leader

Find a leader to meet the moment and create the conditions for success from the start

The right appointment is only the start

A leadership need can emerge suddenly or build over time. A CEO may leave. A strategy may demand a capability the business does not yet have. An incumbent may no longer fit the mandate. The business may need a leader who can create momentum, restore confidence, or carry a difficult transition.

The visible question is who should take the role. The harder question is what the enterprise will require from that leader once the decision is made.

Heidrick helps boards, CEOs, and executive teams answer both. We define the mandate in the context of the business, assess internal and external leaders against what lies ahead, and help create the conditions for the right leader to succeed from day one.

What the moment requires

  • 01

Define the mandate the business actually needs

Define what the business needs the leader to change, not just what the role has
historically owned, clarifying the strategic remit, the operating conditions, and the
leadership team the new leader will inherit.

  • 02

Test the choice against real pressure

Assess internal and external leaders against the decisions, scrutiny, and pace they
will face after appointment. The best candidate on paper is not always the leader the next chapter requires.

  • 03

    Build a start that lasts

Prepare the board, leadership team, and organization for what follows the appointment, establishing alignment around the leader, the relationships they need to build, and what matters most in the transition.

  • 04

Protect momentum when the gap cannot wait

Bring in experienced interim leadership and specialist capability when an immediate gap puts performance, credibility, or execution at risk

Proof under pressure

The appointment was the beginning of the decision, not the end of it.

A leading health and wellness company needed to complete a ready-now internal COO's transition to CEO, while still testing that choice against the broader leadership market and the company's long-term succession picture.

Heidrick helped the board assess the internal successor against external finalists, pressure-test the decision against the business's future mandate, and prepare the incoming CEO to lead from day one. The appointment closed in six months.

What followed made clear that the CEO appointment was only the first leadership decision. Heidrick went on to place seven additional leaders across the business, including a CFO, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, and two business-unit presidents hired through a single search, alongside interim leaders in growth-critical functions. Every one of those leaders remains in role today.

The result was more than a successful CEO succession: it was a leadership bench built to carry the growth strategy the new CEO could not execute alone.

Do not let the role define the decision.

When the leadership need is clear but the path forward is not, bring Heidrick into the decision early.
